Abstract

This study addresses an important point in the field of US-Saudi relations, which revolved around US efforts to move the Saudi position, influence it, and bring about rapprochement with the US approach to peace in the Middle East. It can be said that there has been no stronger and more solid relationship than the relationship between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its Arab neighbors in contemporary history, more than its relationship with Egypt-with limited exceptions--. However, at the same time, it adhered to the Arab consensus to address the Palestinian issue, and the Kingdom sided with the Palestinian right and the necessity of Arab unity. This is the political basis that the wise policy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has outlined, and it became clear after the United States sponsored a separate peace in the region, which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia rejected in commitment to the Arab consensus and its insistence on obtaining Palestinian rights before any other step. The pressures of the United States of America on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to support American policy in the region from the beginning of 1979 until the conclusion of the peace treaty in March 1979 were made clear. The United States also failed to dissuade the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from the Arab consensus and the consequences of adhering to it at that time, which rejected a separate peace. Then the study clarified the American position on the Kingdom’s refusal to finance the F-5 aircraft deal, which occupied the month of May 1979 in response to the United States’ disregard for the Arab consensus, and covered the largest area in American-Saudi relations. Rather, those relations threatened to deteriorate in more than one incident during the year 1979, but the Kingdom remained steadfast and adhered to its usual principles as usual, independent in its decision, giving first priority to the Arab consensus and nothing else.
