Abstract

This study aimed to explore the reality of parental treatment styles in the formation of maladaptive behavioral patterns—aggressive and withdrawn behavior—in their youth with intellectual disabilities. The study employed a descriptive-quantitative design, and a questionnaire was used to collect data prepared by the researchers. The study sample consisted of 321 participants, mothers and fathers of individuals with intellectual disabilities in the Qassim region. The quantitative results indicated that the level of parental treatment styles in the formation of maladaptive behavioral patterns in their youth with intellectual disabilities was high for aggressive behavior, while it was very high for withdrawn behavior. The study found no statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the two groups of fathers and mothers in parental treatment styles in the formation of maladaptive behavioral patterns—aggressive behavior—attributable to the variable of parental gender. Furthermore, there were no statistically significant differences between the mean scores of parents regarding parental treatment styles in the formation of maladaptive behavioral patterns—withdrawal behavior—attributable to the variable of parental education.
