This study investigates a contemporary experiment in employing unconventional natural material in sculpture, namely cuttlebone, through an integrated theoretical and practical approach. The central research question is: How can the formal and expressive properties of cuttlebone be utilized in producing contemporary sculptures? The objectives are to: identify the main characteristics of contemporary sculpture and its relationship to material diversity; examine the potential of non-traditional natural materials; analyze selected works of Saudi sculptors who employed environmental resources; and conduct experimental sculptural practices using cuttlebone. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical and experimental methodology, applying observation and Feldman’s model of visual analysis. Findings reveal that cuttlebone possesses diverse structural and aesthetic potentials, including carving, casting, and assemblage, while being sustainable and locally available. The study highlights the scarcity of employing this material in Saudi contemporary sculpture despite the recurring presence of marine themes. It recommends further theoretical and experimental studies on cuttlebone and other environmental materials to support experimental directions and enrich contemporary sculptural practices in Saudi Arabia.Downloads
