Abstract

Meanings of ‘Lama’ are divided into literal and nominal. It came as negating, conditional, adverbial, and exceptional in regard to meaning. And it came as assertive and neglected as a non-operative in regard to function. It varies between simple and compound forms in order for the meaning to be consisted with context and sentence structure. The aim of this study is to observe the structural differences that accompanied “Lama” in different parts of speech according to context where ‘Lama’ occurred, performing negation, exception and adverbial meanings according to sentence structures. Also, to demonstrate the changes in structure and significance caused by the intended context and meaning. The study monitored and analyzed a number of examples from the Holy Quran and Arab proverbs that demonstrate the different meanings of ‘Lama’; to reach the scientific analysis that achieves the objective of this study. As well as to uncover what have grammarians agreed upon ‘Lama’s significance in various structures and explain the reasons of disagreement on other structures. And to clarify the more likely accurate significance based on presumptions of context and intended meaning in the studied examples.
