The Awareness of Medical Social Workers Regarding the Employment of Artificial Intelligence Applications in Professional Practice: A Study in the Field of Medical Social Work

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the awareness of medical social workers regarding the employment of artificial intelligence applications in professional practice. It relied on a social survey methodology using a questionnaire tool on a purposive sample of 130 medical social workers in the health sector in Riyadh. The study found that there is a high level of awareness among medical social workers about artificial intelligence technologies, with a mean score of (2.49), indicating their recognition of the potential of AI to enhance professional performance. However, some statements showed a moderate level of awareness, suggesting a gap in knowledge regarding specific applications. The results also indicated a high level of readiness and acceptance among medical social workers to integrate AI applications into their work, with a mean score of (2.34). Many social workers expressed openness to using these applications, particularly in the fields of data analysis and providing social support. Additionally, the findings revealed a moderate level of challenges and concerns associated with employing AI applications, with a mean score of (2.29). Among the main concerns were the need for clear policies and procedures for using AI, worries about the accuracy of recommendations, patient data privacy, and a lack of appropriate training. The results showed strong agreement that AI applications could contribute to improving the quality of social health services. Important areas identified included enhancing the speed and efficiency of clinical report preparation, supporting research and development, improving the accuracy of assessing patients' needs, and providing remote social support. The possibility of using AI to monitor the progress of medical cases and design tailored interventions for patients was also highlighted.
