Metaphorical Imagery in the Book "Ad-Durr Al-Masun In Sciences of Al-Kitab Al-Maknun": An Epistemic Linguistic Perspective with Surah Al-Baqarah as a Model

Abstract

The research attempts to bridge ancient linguistic knowledge with modern linguistic understanding through the light of epistemic linguistics, which focuses on studying language through cognitive mental processes. The study seeks to accomplish an applied epistemic approach rooted in Arab heritage, drawing its tools from the epistemic linguistic lesson. It was conducted under the title "Metaphorical Imagery in the Book "Ad-Durr Al-Masun in Science of Al-Kitab Al-Maknun" by Al-Samin Al-Halabi (756 AH) - An Epistemic Approach in Models from Surah Al-Baqarah". The importance of the research in metaphorical imagery in this manuscript is highlighted from two perspectives: the concern of the epistemic linguistic trend with mental imagery, and the specificity of semantic analysis of Al-Samin Al-Halabi, who approaches epistemic methods. Among the most important research findings are: 1- The semantic and cognitive depth of Al-Samin Al-Halabi; he attempted to connect between the source and the target in his analysis and explanation, and made clear efforts to identify the sources of metaphorical imagery and its domains. 2- In reading the interpretations of Al-Samin Al-Halabi, we find that he largely formed metaphorical imagery from the human body, as in the terms (prayer, awe, forgiveness, loss, wrapping), making the body a source of metaphorical imagery in which he applied the conceptual pattern of body parts, movements, and attributes to the conceptual pattern of religious meanings and abstract concepts in metaphors drawn from the human body. 3- The possibility of utilizing data from modern linguistic theories on Arabic linguistic heritage.
