Plural in the Great Dictionary An Applied Study on the Letter Jim

Abstract

The research aims primarily to address the issue of plural, and to present what is related to it theoretically and procedurally; for the purpose of revealing its concepts, and clarifying what is related to it in the Great Dictionary, and the extent of its success or failure in dealing with it; It has been divided into an introduction, a preface, and three chapters. Each of the three chapters took two overlapping aspects of the study, theoretical, concerned with what was mentioned regarding each chapter in the introduction to the Great Dictionary, the field of study and in lexicographical studies, and practical, paralleling those theoretical references and clarifying their existence or nonexistence through studying the text of the fourth part of the dictionary, which is concerned with the letter Jim. The researcher adopted various means for this, such as statistical tables and comparative studies, according to the issue at hand. He concluded that the great dictionary did not use any of the plural terms except the following terms: [word - material - expression], and he mentioned them in both the singular and plural forms, and he ignored an important term, which is the term introduction, and that the dictionary was largely successful in the sources it used to collect its material, and yet it ignored some important sources that are related to enriching the material of the dictionary, especially the non-linguistic ones, such as the sayings of (Ibn Battuta), for example, as it became clear that there was no reference to that, and that he relied in collecting its material to a large and basic extent on old books from dictionaries and other books such as books of science, literature and history, and the proportion of new things in it is the least, even though it included modern terms and words that were approved by the academy or others, and that the dictionary included abundant linguistic material, which appeared in the chapter on the letter jim, which is a characteristic that I see as being reflected in all parts of the dictionary
