The Relationship Between East and West from the Perspective of the Orientalist Annemarie Schimmel

Abstract

This study explores the contributions of the German orientalist Annemarie Schimmel as a distinctive model of orientalism, differing from the traditional approach often associated with conflict and dominance. The study aims to analyze her perspective on the East and the West by addressing various issues, such as the concept of East and West, cultural interaction, the roots of historical enmity, and the prospects for future understanding. The research highlights Schimmel’s role in presenting a fair image of Islam through her focus on its spiritual dimensions, particularly Islamic mysticism (Sufism), and her emphasis on shared human values that could serve as a bridge for cultural understanding. The study addresses the question: To what extent can Annemarie Schimmel’s experience be considered a genuine model of civilizational interaction between East and West, free from the traditional biases of orientalism? Several sub-questions arise from this central issue, including: How did Schimmel portray the East in her writings? What is her view of the East-West relationship? And how can her ideas contribute to building bridges of cultural and religious dialogue? The methodology employed includes examining the historical East-West relationship, analyzing Schimmel’s texts and writings, and comparing her approach with traditional orientalism. The study highlights the strengths of her work, such as her appreciation of cultural interaction and her focus on mysticism as a platform for understanding. However, it also critiques her lack of attention to the complex social and political dynamics influencing East-West relations. The research seeks to demonstrate how balanced orientalism, as exemplified by Schimmel, can contribute to improving the image of Islam in the West and fostering mutual understanding beyond stereotypes and cultural dominance.
