Values and Morals of the Western Community in Different Ages in Selected Novels

Abstract

The values and morals of Western communities vary significantly across different eras, heavily influenced by socio-cultural and religious contexts. However, these values and morals can be abandoned or transformed over time due to various circumstances. The convictions and traditions rooted in socio-cultural and religious values often clash with the interests and beliefs of newer generations. This study examines two novels from different periods that have also been adapted into films due to the significance of their social context: Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (published in 1850) Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (published in 2005 and translated into English 2008). By exploring the historical context and the evolution of socio-cultural values, the study investigates how communities view their socio-cultural and religious legacies and their inclination to challenge or uphold these values. The study reveals that new generations often reject traditional socio-cultural and religious values, while earlier generations strive to maintain them. The older generations view the abandonment of these values and morals as a sin that brings disrepute to the individual within the community. This tension between maintaining traditional values and embracing new beliefs is a central theme in both novels.
