This study aims to compile a bibliography of Tunisian folk proverbs relating to camels, drawing on eight publications. Our interest in this topic was motivated by two main reasons. First, relatively little attention has been devoted to camels in folk proverbs compared with the body of research conducted on this animal in folk poetry. Second, we observed several interesting phenomena revealed by these proverbs, most notably the numerical discrepancy between the occurrences of the two terms camel (male camel) and she-camel, as well as the phenomenon of personification, whereby the camel is given a voice and made to utter words of wisdom. The study is divided into two sections. In the first, we collected the proverbs and arranged them alphabetically. In the second, we presented a number of preliminary observations concerning our corpus and the proverbs it contains. The study concludes with several findings, the most significant of which is that the corpus of camel-related proverbs in Tunisian folk tradition is extensive, diverse in form, and varied in meaning. This finding calls for further studies based on the preliminary observations generated by the statistical analysis of the corpus, employing critical approaches such as structuralism, semiotics, semantics, and cultural criticism.Downloads
