Abstract

Throughout the ages, the family has been exposed to problems that shook its stability and structure, represented by domestic violence and divorce, especially in the current era, which has witnessed changes in the technological, social, economic, and cultural fields that have greatly and suddenly exacerbated this phenomenon. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the phenomenon of divorce in light of these changes and the proposed solutions to reduce it from the point of view of divorced men, divorced women, judges, and Sharia lawyers in Irbid Governorate as a population for the study. The study sample consisted of (233) divorced men, divorcees, judges, and Sharia lawyers who were selected by a stratified method. The study used the descriptive analytical method and adopted two robust tools in collecting data: One of them is a questionnaire that investigates the factors leading to divorce in light of economic, social, cultural, and moral variables, which was answered by the previous sample, and another questionnaire that investigates the proposed solutions to reduce the phenomenon of divorce after revealing the factors leading to divorce in the first tool, and was answered by the same sample of divorced men, male and female, judges, and Sharia lawyers from the study population. To answer the study’s questions, appropriate statistical methods were used to reach the results. The results indicated that there was slightly varying agreement among them on the moral, cultural, social, and economic factors leading to and causing divorce in Jordan in Irbid Governorate, from the viewpoints of divorced men and women, judges, and Sharia lawyers. Moral factors came in first place. From the point of view of divorced men and women and Sharia Judges and lawyers, there was high agreement among these factors, which were marital infidelity, consumption of alcohol and drugs, and bad character of one of the spouses, while concealing congenital and moral defects from the other party before marriage was the first option from the point of view of Sharia judges. Then came the cultural factors second, then the social and economic factors, which were approved at an average level, while the economic factors came in last place among those factors with the lowest arithmetic average. The study also proposed a set of recommendations based on the proposed solutions to reduce divorce, the most important of which is developing religious and moral motivation. In society, educating parents not to hide birth and physical defects from the other party, not to force marriage, combating domestic violence in society, activating the role of educational and religious institutions to educate spouses about their rights and duties, and holding educational rehabilitation courses for those approaching marriage provided by specialized institutions.
