Abstract

This study explores the perspectives of workers in Palestinian civil society organizations on fostering citizenship among Palestinian children. Citizenship is regarded as a cornerstone for building modern societies by reinforcing national identity, belonging, and social responsibility, particularly amid the ongoing political, social, and economic challenges faced by Palestinians. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the study conducted semi-structured interviews with seven specialists in civil society and civic education. It aimed to analyze existing programs and initiatives and assess their effects on children’s awareness and community engagement. Findings reveal that civil society organizations play an effective role in instilling citizenship values through educational, cultural, and social activities that encourage dialogue, teamwork, and national affiliation. Yet, these organizations confront challenges such as limited funding, weak volunteer culture, social restrictions on girls’ participation, and poor institutional coordination. The study recommends enhancing collaboration with the Ministry of Education to integrate citizenship concepts into school curricula, utilizing digital media for awareness-raising, and developing a standardized educational guide that reflects the Palestinian cultural context. These measures aim to prepare a well-informed generation capable of practicing citizenship responsibly and effectively.
