The Dream fragments and their psychological representations in the novel (Trees and the Assassination of Marzouq) By Abdel Rahman Munif

Abstract

This study examined dream fragments and their psychological representations in the novel Trees and the Assassination of Marzouq by Abdel Rahman Munif. The research sought to explore dream phenomena, whether in a dream or wakefulness, and analyze their fragmented psychological representations that reflected the inner conflict of the self and its deep desire to satisfy its psychological and emotional needs, and reveal what it is unable to achieve in lived reality. The research relied on the structural psychoanalytic approach as an effective critical tool to deconstruct linguistic contexts and the conscious and unconscious interactions that overlap in them. The emergence of dreams was linked to the unconscious in this novel, as multiple psychological fragments were embodied in feelings of panic, pain, loss, rebellion, violence, and submission, which allowed for exploring the tormented psychological identities that the self lives. Some of the dreams in the novel also, reflected the disorder of the self and its fluctuation between severe psychological tensions, as the contexts competed; To reveal internal conflicts that reflect disturbed feelings that push the self to live in a dream world as an unconscious defense mechanism, the self resorted to mechanisms such as: discharge, displacement, projection, and integration, as means of escaping from its painful reality, and looking forward to a stage of lost psychological satisfaction. Moreover, the self took daydreams as a refuge to protect itself from painful thoughts and feelings in a conscious way, so several psychologies appeared represented in the suppression and destruction of emotions, seriousness, sarcasm, disappointment, hope, and hatred, as it discharged those energies in the dream; to give itself renewed psychological energy, enhance its sense of value and hope, and help it move away from a world charged with ambiguity and challenges by relying on mechanisms such as secondary consolidation that modifies the dream in order to present it in the form of a comprehensible and coherent scenario, and psychological consolidation in which the dream is modified and its individual path is modified to the collective.
