The Dialectic of Panegyric and Satire in Al-Jahiz’s Kitab al-Tarbiʿ wa al-Tadwīr

Abstract

Al-Jahiz stands as a major figure in classical Arabic literature, distinguished by his encyclopedic knowledge, thematic diversity, and distinctive linguistic style. Kitab al-Tarbiʿ wa al-Tadwīr, the focus of this study, occupies a unique position not only within Al-Jahiz’s corpus but also within classical Arabic prose as a whole. It is a divergent literary text characterized by a dual structure of surface and depth, in which the concealed dimension proves more critical and profound than its apparent meaning. This study aims to explore the dialectical relationship between panegyric and satire in the text, while examining its aesthetic and intellectual dimensions. It seeks to address several key questions: Why did Al-Jahiz focus on Ahmad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab despite his insignificance? Was this focus intended merely as satire, or did it serve a deeper purpose? What is the significance of employing dialogue, dialectic, and argumentation when the interlocutor is incapable of genuine debate? Methodologically, the study adopts Hermeneutics and Semiotics as complementary analytical frameworks. Hermeneutics allows for multiple interpretive readings of the text, while Semiotics facilitates the examination of its underlying sign systems and their latent meanings. The study concludes that Kitab al-Tarbiʿ wa al-Tadwīr is fundamentally a work of self-praise (fakhr), in which overt satire functions primarily as a rhetorical strategy rather than an end in itself. The study further recommends that the text remains open to additional critical inquiry, particularly through the lens of Cultural Criticism, to uncover the concealed cultural patterns embedded within it.
